Gollum's Porch, 2007
The other day I walked through Home Depot's garden department and was shocked to see mums. With the weather still unbearable--and knowing that I'm death to all plants--I made a note to buy them later, even if they're picked over (pardon the pun). I'm not sure which color I'll go with this year.
We planted pumkins in the garden this year, so I should have plenty of home grown decorations.
Decisions, decisions.

I've been looking at inspiration pictures.

Will you adopt me, pleeeeeease! You have created such a wonderful life for you and your family! Every time, I click on your blog, I find more wonderful parts of your life and your talents. Those doors are absolutely stunning, and this lovely patio furniture, and that view, and, and, and....! Take me home with you, pleeeeeease! Laurie, a/k/a bargainhunr
ReplyDeleteHi, Gollum!! I love your porch and see you have a Bunny Foo Foo like mine! They get into so much trouble, don't they? Mums, already! They would burn to a crisp here at my house - it's still too dern hot!! Oh, to have home grown pumpkins! You'll have to show us your pumpkin patch!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Hello, Gollum,
ReplyDeleteFall is in the air where I live. At a store today I saw huge pots of mums for $20 each. Like you, I resisted. After all, I've scheduled summer activities for the next two weeks. And it's been a short summer, to say the least. By the way, I love your front door and steps! Vivid mums in pots will be so welcoming in the fall. Maybe we'd better go back and choose our colors! Fieldstone/Pam
I have been seing trees turning color. I think fall is going to come early this year. I like a mix of flowers and pumpkins.I do enjoy the color of fall. Kathy
ReplyDeleteHi Gollum!
ReplyDeleteI'm longing for fall too. I bought a rust colored gord & other assorted fall decorations for a table centerpiece a couple of weeks ago, then agonized over the appropriate base which prompted a couple of re-do's. I found new candle holders last weekend that I just had to buy. :0} My DH just didn't understand why I really needed them, but at least I could reuse my fall pillar candles. I haven't gotten to the outdoor flowers & fall decorations yet. ;0}
Diane
LOL, death to plants....you crack me up!
ReplyDeleteYour house must be fun to decorate for fall. I mean, who can say they have their own pumpkin patch? Cool!
I love decorating for fall. I have considered using white pumpkins and white mums for something different this fall.
ReplyDeleteI used to work for a beautiful orchard and they always had beautiful mums.
Can't wait to get a glimpse of your pumpkin patch!
Jamie
You've just convinced me to go buy mum's. I believe I like the combination of purple mum's and pumpkins together for my front porch. Yup....I'm going to go buy some mum's this weekend.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do love the 'Fall Colors' I am not happy to see the end of summer. My husband is covering the pool, as I write. :( He has many projects to do and doesn't want the work involved with keeping up the pool too.
Last year friends gave us GREEN PUMPKINS, a farmer told them they were the best pumpkins for making pies, they know this is my favorite dessert. :) So I made some, using a different recipe than my usual, it called for more spices, which I didn't care for. Back to my old recipe this year.;) My husband planted the seeds from the green pumpkins, we have beautiful vines, but only one pumpkin. :(
The green pumpkins would look beautiful with those rust colored Mums or fantastic with yellow, white, etc... for your front entrance.
Check your email, I'm sending you a picture from Martha Stewart 1994 Oct. issue, she has LACE-PATTERNED PUMPKINS, which I've always intented to try doing in ceramics. With all the work involved, I thought I'd like to keep them. Not many ceramic places have greenware any more, it's all been fired already.
Thanks for another great post.
Hugs

Gullom, Your front entrance in to your house is beautiful. I loved the pumpkin colored Mums that you chose last year. I love the colors of Fall! The only sad thing about the Fall is that Winters a coming... Oh My!
ReplyDeleteI went to Grad school in Manchester, NH. I can not tell you how beautiful the scenery was during October and November! It was breathtaking! I felt as though I were trapped in a famous Fall Painting. Everywhere I looked was magically beautiful.
I bet your house is fun to decorate! Thanks for sharing! Oh and Mum is the word! I will be sure to purchase a few for my front steps this season!
xoxo

I fight fall tooth and nail. I always say I will do some outdoor fall displays, but just can't bring myself to do it! If I buy so much as one fall flower, I am afraid will invite the frost to kill my gardens. (speaking of frost, can you imagine...we had another frost warning last night..the last one was beginning of July) I will do some indoor pumpkins etc, but just cannot bring myself to do them outside!
ReplyDeleteAwwww...I just love fall!! Thanks for the inspiration and your porch is beautiful!

As I was driving around town yesterday, I noticed that we already have trees changing color. There are mums at all the garden centers but I can't bring myself to buy them this early. By Halloween they would be dead for sure! I love the little pumpkins perched on the fence posts. Gollum, that view of yours is amazing. I would plant myself on that porch and never get anything done. Hope your weekend is great and restful! Carol
ReplyDeleteLovely view of your "porch"! We have a white mum in our side garden that has begun to bloom. We have dark yellow mums, full of buds, in other areas of the yard. I'm working on an idea for our front porch, that involves mums. I love the rusty colors as well as the dark yellow mums.
ReplyDeleteThe weather, here in Missouri, is leaving hints of autumn. I love it! My favorite season!
Oh Gollum.. don't you love the changing of the seasons?? I love fall and the colors that burst on a daily basis... I've noticed trees around here starting to turn as well.. pretty spooky really..don't need or want an early winter.. I've already decorated the shop for fall and the gals have been buying early and heavy..so have had to reorder..I haven't been out to check the status of the mums in our area yet..but am looking forward to that shopping trip.. Good idea Sheila.. do we get a glimpse of your pumpkin patch??? hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteOh I forgot... I too have a bunny that stands as yours does.. mine has to stay inside.. it's more ceramic than concrete.. an aunt made him for me many years ago... I've named him Monroe for the town they lived in for many years...You know how I "adore" bunnies...lynne
ReplyDeleteFall - my favorite time of year. I love pumpkins, squash, ornamental kale, bittersweet....and of course the Mums. You are right decisions, decisions which color to chose. I'm always a sucker for the "daisy-type" mums. Jacob has to say "Mum - just walk away".....Robyn
ReplyDeleteHi Gollum :)
ReplyDeleteI need Fall to come quickly. I'm positivly sweltering in this heat!
I loved all the inspiration pics. The one with the lone pumpkin above the front door cracked me up :)
hugs,
rue
Hello Gollum;
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love fall? I have one question about the pineapple cake. The recipe said to reserving1/4 cup juice from the can of pineapple juice. I just add it to the batter right after the vanilla was that right.... It was wonderful.
thanks for sharing....

I believe all the plants I try to grow commit suicide. That is the only explanation I can come up with. I can follow all the instructions to the letter, and the plants still die. Both houseplants and plants I purchase for the yard. Could be our lack of necessary rain the past few years coupled with watering restrictions, maybe the yard plants are not getting well enough established during their first growing season, to make it through the ensuing winter. I don't get good sunlight in my home, so I tell myself that the indoor plants are starving for light. Sun rises on one end of the house and sets on the other. Front porch shields the east windows and not much light from the north side either. I still occasionally pick up a new victim. I refuse to give up.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your front doors! I am officially kicking off Tablescape Tuesday! Whoo, Hoo! :-) Anyone who would like for me to show a link to their tablescape needs to leave a comment at my blog by Sunday evening, and I will add their blog name and link to a list that will be posted on my blog on Tuesdays. Thanks for helping me spread the word. :-) Susan http://betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeletePat, yes--I'm sorry about that. I add the pineapple juice to the batter. I add it to the dry ingredients. I fold in the whipped egg whites last. Easy does it.
ReplyDeleteRegarding fall, I always have some sort of party in October. I have a Dept 54 spooky tree that I always put in the entry hall on a table--and assorted ceramic pumpkins and gourds. After Labor Day, I'll start putting it all together.
Outside, I have two huge, dark empty urns (similar to the one pictured in the Humongous Indoor Ficus blog post). They would look great filled with ornamental cabbage, ivy, and mums, like in the next-to-the-bottom inspiration picture. They would look welcoming at the end of the walkway, with a few of the homegrown pumpkins. I always put pumpkins around the stone fountain, too. Last year, I put little pumpkins on the black fence posts, but the donkeys immediately knocked them over.
Excuse me--it's the 5th photo from the bottom.
ReplyDeleteHI, I am HOPING I see this posted later. I LOVE to decorate for fall cause they are my FAVORITE colors....inside and out!:) So, I have alot of fall decorations but TRY to wait til maybe the second week in Sept. I plant my summer impatiens in front all red and orange so that when I do "FALL" it all looks pretty! Thanks for the pictures! Pinky:)
ReplyDeleteGreat post today...thanks! I love the photo of the stone steps with one pumpkin on each step.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend one and all.
Love that planter, so pretty! Jen r

ReplyDeleteGollum isn't fall wonderful? That crisp bite in the air, the changing colors of the leaves....The venti non fat extra hot (no whip) mocha from starbucks...Ahem sorry I got carried away! Fall is my favorite time of year!! While others feel winter coming on...I feel a world of possibilities is just around the corner....Aren't I silly? And your front porch is frenchy heaven! LOVE it girl!! Vanna
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same dang thing....whats up with Mums this early...heck mine would be dead looong before fall even arrived. I love the bunnies on your porch...of course if I thought you wouldn't call the police I WOULD LIVE ON YOUR PORCH!!! It's GORGEOUS! I can't wait to see what you come up with this year...no pressure...but we all expect you to WOW US! lol
ReplyDeleteOh! The fall inspiration pics are, well, INSPIRATIONAL!! And I think I could eat that beautiful little donkey with a spoon!!
ReplyDeleteFound your blog through Pat's...Glad I did!!
All those pix remind me how much I love fall, but I am not ready for it yet. Somehow I missed most of the summer...where did it go?
ReplyDeleteNothing says fall like a pumpkin on the porch. I think the planter with the burnt orange dahlias, ivy and gourds would be a lovely choice for your porch.
ReplyDeleteI love decorating for fall, but this year I am waiting until mid-Sept. Last year I had it out the day after Labor Day, and I was sick of it by Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeletewhat a fun and creative blog. I foudn you by way of my friend Pat on her "Back POrch".
ReplyDeleteI'll be back!
Love the pumpkins!~
